It gets better with age is a lie!#wine, #oldwine, #agedwine, #wine2duelWhat do you mean it’s a lie?You may have heard that things get better with age. It has been said about many things but I’m referring to wine. It turns out that it doesn’t really get better with age, it changes. Whether you like how it changed depends on many things.Some of the best things are learned by accident.I am writing this as a result of accidentally opening a bottle of 13 year old Claret when I thought I was opening a 3 year old bottle of the same wine. I started to wonder when I poured some in my glass and the color was not exactly as expected. I lifted the glass and the aroma was not exactly the fruit driven style I was expecting.What do I know you may be asking. Accidental learning started back in the early 80s with gifts of wine. I started collecting them under my stairs because I wasn’t yet interested in wine. Luckily the person that gave them to me came back and suggested we taste them before they had an opportunity to go bad. We were lucky that I live in a cool weather beach community so the temperatures under the stairs turned out to be rather good for storage. After those tastes I was hooked and spent the years since looking for the perfect wine.Is aging wine worth it?That might just be the million dollar question. Let’s take a look at my most recent experience. The bottle aged was a less than $20 grocery store available blend. What did it taste like? Not fresh that’s for sure. If you open a modern less than $20 California red blend from the grocery store you will more than likely get what many experts describe as a fruit bomb. This wasn’t that! Instead the smell of bright fruit was replaced by dark and broudy fruit. To me it was like the difference between fresh meat and beef jerky. Things had definitely changed in the bottle. Would you like it? Should you age your wine? I think that the best way to answer that is to quote a Master Sommelier and a teacher of mine, Peter Neptune. “The best way to experience what happens when you age wine is to buy a case and pull out a bottle once a year or every other year to see.” Unfortunately I never seem to have enough storage space to put away cases but I sure wish I had another bottle of old stuff! ...
